the field of Display Marketing. We seized a wonderful opportunity to provide
a much-needed, direct service to the consumer at a time when few others
would and the shop at work concept was born!
Many years ago, a book publisher fretted over the huge volume of unsold
inventory in his warehouse. Knowing how it was adversely effecting his
capital and haunted by his banker’s weekly harassment, he sought a solution
to his problem. A friend suggested the publisher collect a few of his better
titles and leave them in his plant’s lunchroom for the friend’s staff to look over.
So, having nothing to lose, he did just that. When he returned several days
later, he was overwhelmed by the response!
It was so phenomenal that he decided to leave books at some of his other
friends’ businesses. Once again, the reaction was unbelievably favorable.
It seemed that people loved the idea of being able to examine the books
before purchasing them!
This, coupled with the attractive pricing the publisher was able to provide,
sealed the fate of this new method of distribution. Thus, Display Marketing
was born.
